Cruel Politics: When David met Martin
The meeting between Martin Seligman and Barbara Ehrenreich was disastrous, at least judged from her own description. They did not hit it off, and we can safely assume they have not stayed in touch. But some time after this meeting, Seligman was contacted by a much more significant person, the British Prime Minister, David Cameron. Unlike the annoying Ehrenreich, Cameron's intentions were genuine. He was not going to make cruel remarks about the happiness equation. He treated Seligman with the respect he thought he deserved as a highly esteemed professor and a pioneer in his field. And Cameron was armed with all of the right questions. He wanted to know if Seligman's vision of positive psychology could be successfully applied to an entire country, making it flourish without making unnecessary and expensive investments in public services.
Cameron had been fascinated by the idea of happiness for a long time and first floated the proposition of a happiness index in 2005, just after assuming leadership of the Conservative Party. But it was not until 2010 that he announced his plan to measure wellbeing in Britain. In a speech delivered in November that year, Cameron explained:
If your goal in politics is to help make a better life for people – which mine is – and if you know, both in your gut and from a huge body of evidence that prosperity alone can't deliver a better life, then you've got to take practical steps to make sure government is properly focused on our quality of life as well as economic growth, and that is what we are trying to do.38
